NEC SUPERGRAFX "PC ENGINE 2" 1988/89

The Supergrafx was released as the successor to the then very popular PC Engine. With more layers of scrolling and a few other new features, it was to do battle with the Super Famicom and Megadrive. As a "bonus" it was backwards compatible with the PC Engine. This was seen as a "bonus" but really limited the system.

PC Engine fans were still very happy with their Duos, so very few bothered buying the very expensive supergrafx. With games approaching $110 each, Supergrafx was quickly brushed aside for the far less expensive CD-ROM media on DUO.

Only a handful of games were ever programmed for the system; Most notable being the much mourned never completed version of STRIDER.

Without much to set it apart from it's cheaper and still popular precursor, it was soon forgotten. By the time NEC got around to releasing the new and much delayed "iron man" hardware, it was hopelessly outdated and soon perished under the onslaught of Saturn and Playstation.

Supergrafx is most notable as being the pinnacle of PC Engine hardware. Equipped properly, as on the left, it can play all SUPERGRAFX, PC ENGINE Hu, CD-ROM, Super CD-ROM, SUPER CD-ROM2, and ARCADE CARD games.

Equipped with a Super CD-ROM2 CD unit and arcade card, the Supergrafx is ready for anything.

The Supergrafx is also known for having the most ambitious console accessory ever known.

The "Power console" was to add a full flight/wheel, throttle and keypad to the Supergrafx, sliding OVER the ENTIRE console.

A prototype exists, and is being offered for some several thousand dollars to the brave PC Engine collector who needs is ALL.

Thanks to Vaciago for a pic of his rig, man is that thing big when set up! the Super Console remains in Japan, pics taken from Yahoo Japan one night when I considered selling my car....

Q & A

Q: How hard is it to get these? Is it expensive?

A: The prices for Supergrafx have soared in recent years, from $75 to $200+ in the space of a few years. Not very hard to get, watch ebay.

Q: Should I bother? Is it worth it? Where can I get one?

A: Get one, it's nice, but not what the myth leads you to believe. A letdown actually. Think PC engine with an extra layer of scrolling.. whoopee. Get one off ebay. Nice, but not THAT nice. For the insane people who think of a tiny grey box when they hear "PC".
