SEGA SATURN

JAPANESE DEVELOPMENT UNIT

The early Saturn development hardware. 1994-95.

The early saturn dev hardware has more in common with the saturn beta hardware than the final design. So much so, that this unit was replaced within months of release. This developer unit does however offer a glimpse into early Saturn hardware development.

The machine has top access to the cartridge slot, and a CD Drive. Most early development systems emulate the CD drive, and do not have a physical drive. The Saturn is unusual in this aspect.

The unit is very large, and extremely heavy. It has a slide off top for easy access to the modifiable hardware.

The inside of the machine is large mass of boards and chips. The chipset has yet to be refined , and the early components take up a huge amount of space. Notice the SIMM slots for memory, and the CPU array.

Large cooling fans and heat sinks are needed to keep it cool.

The Saturn Sound Box development hardware. Large and ugly, like the Saturn dev unit.
